Meet A Need In The Community

Contact your local school or government to see where they may need volunteers.

Coachella Valley Rescue Mission Outreach Opportunity

Cochella Valley Rescue Mission has an immediate need for GED tutors/mentors.

As a part of our outreach ministries to the community, we are asking for volunteers to assist by offering your skills to help them in various areas. There is a need for volunteers to help as tutors for GED in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Sessions are 1-2 hours in the afternoons or in the evenings. There is also a need for volunteers to help with Life Skills classes in the areas of Computer Lab, Social Skills, Health and Life Style, Finance and Budgeting Workforce Development and Bible Studies. Mentors are needed for the New Life Program, Librarians, and Medical Professionals.

Frank and Nancy Leinen are serving as the church’s liaison with CVRM. Please contact them to volunteer or to get more information.

The Narrow Door

Volunteer to help the homeless and low-income people. You can donate food, help create gift boxes of food, or help in the distribution of items to the families.

Contact: Dave Ramirez at David@thenarrowdoor.org or
call (760) 775-6200.

You Are Not Alone

Volunteer to sit alongside a cancer patient during their journey through cancer chemotherapy and doctor visits. Driving someone to a medical appointment, spending time with patients during their treatments, or taking notes during a doctor’s visit are pretty easy tasks to do. You don’t need a medical degree to be qualified.

Contact: Deanna Odman at mardee7731@msn.com or call (760) 251-1928.

Prison Ministry

Volunteer with other Southwest men and women to spend a Sunday afternoon in November in support of prisoners at Calipatria State Prison. Inmates will have completed 72 hours of study and learning about Jesus and the life He died to give to them. Your presence there will mean a great deal to these men who are working to turn their lives around. Worship together with them and hear their stories. A large group will be leaving together from Southwest Community Church.

Contact: Dick Jacobson at Jacobson_richard@yahoo.com.

Bottles to Bibles

Care for the planet and share the Gospel around the world. Create a recycling ministry and use the money to send Bibles to places where they have limited or no access to the Gospel.

Contact: Kim Harrell at kim.harrell@southwestcc.org or
call (760) 200-200 ext. 2279.

The Refuge

Prepare and serve food at a predetermined park for the homeless and those in transitional housing. Build relationships, present a Bible study or brief Bible lesson, and pray for and with individuals. Several small groups rotate for one to two months – serving one time every two months.

Contact: Kristen at Kristen@thenarrowdoor.org or
call (760) 989-2710.

Safe Families

Safe Families is a network of families who are passionate about helping and caring for at-risk children and supporting strong families. It is successful when many volunteers get involved at every level to help provide for the needs of the children.

Contact: Chris at chrisdebg@aol.com.

Click Below for more information about how you can volunteer for Safe Families!

Southwest Thrift Store

Donate goods. Volunteer at one of the thrift stores and extend the ministry of SCC into the community. Interact with people that ordinarily would not come to a church service. The thrift store proceeds are currently helping support orphans in Brazil, Crisis Pregnancy Center, and high school students.

Contact: Carolyn Jahnke at carolyn.jahnke@southwestcc.org or call (760) 360-4443

Neighborhood Outreach

We have the opportunity to help with the needs of children, parents and seniors in this low income housing community located within a mile of our church! Giving of your time, talent and treasure in areas such as afterschool homework assistance, fun enrichment activities, monthly BBQ's, food insecurity and more will benefit these neighbors!

Contact: Paula Simonds at psimonds@desertymca.org or
(760) 219-3762

Grace To Go BAGS

This is a great way to care for the homeless among us. Fill a ziplock baggie with bars, hygiene products, water, a Bible verse or tract. Carry 1 or 2 in your car, and give them to a homeless person as you pass by in the normal course of your life.

The following is a suggested list of items. This is not an exhaustive list, and you don't need to put all of it in the bag. Think of the things that you would need if you were living on the street and homeless and had no place to store anything.

  • Travel size soap
  • Shampoo
  • Lotion
  • Washclothes
  • Toothbrushes
  • Toothpaste
  • Combs
  • Razors
  • Mouth washes
  • Dental floss
  • Granola bars
  • Water
  • Hand sanitize
  • Cheese & cracker packs
  • Fruit

Under His Wings

SCRIPTURES TO LEAN ON – “Under His Wings.” When going through difficult times, request a free book that includes inspirational Bible verses for yourself or for another by sending the name and address, and one will be mailed to you or your loved one. Contact Kathy Cooper at wings@dc.rr.com.
